Social Media

Social Media has made a huge impact to the entire world and not just to Internet marketers. If you have been doing anything online at all, you will know that Social media is pretty much the center of attention to the world right now. Almost everybody that spends time online these days are somehow connected with some social media network of their choice. Even if some of us do not admit being involved with any social media at all, it is hard for them to say no when asked if they’ve read anything recently on a blog.

Social media has grown into a very big industry and information is getting shared so fast and at a scale so big, it is very hard to neither control nor predict what is going to happen in the future. All we know is, is how people communicate mainly these days.

Social media has changed the way we brand.

The first notable difference that has brought to the table is that we as a business person no longer have the full control of our business brands. The power now lies in the customer. This in return gives businesses no choice but to adapt and perform well at all times. Customer services have to be top notch and customer satisfaction has to be the top priority. Business owners no longer have the luxury to ignore the customer satisfaction factor in their business because one small mistake or one small misconception can easily destroy your company’s brand.

And the scary part is that it can happen overnight. This is simply because people are indeed connected all over the world on the internet and social media. Rumors and news travel so fast these days in digital format and there’s really nothing you as a small-business person can do to stop things from getting out of hands if you piss off a customer. A bad reputation online can very well hurt your sales and your profits graphs will drop like a dead stone.

Guiding your customers to help your brand expand

Another significant change that has brought to the table of marketers alike is that you no longer hold the power to persuade your prospects. Instead what you can do is guide your customers and prospects to slowly build your brand with you. You can do this by encouraging ‘likes’, and commenting on your posts on social media. The more fans you get on your social media pages such as a fan page on Facebook, the easier it is for others to put their trust on you. People do not just trust your words anymore but they will listen to what everyone else thinks about you.

To make things worse, these internet crowd sticks together very well. If the majority likes your product, those who comment badly about your product will get hammered with angry fans of yours. People will naturally defend you without you having to do much. However, if you are disliked by the majority, then you need to do something drastic to win their hearts back fast (like a huge apology and compensation) or your business will suffer a dreadful downfall.

From the masses to the individuals

In the past, any problems are dealt with a huge announcement or problems are solved within product updates or promotions. However, in the social media age, you get questions from individuals, and you have to pay attention to each one of them. For example, on Facebook, you will get comments or questions that the public can see. Responding fast to these questions to that singular person will benefit your company’s customer service. Plus, the impression that you will give (since everyone can see your conversation) is immensely powerful in helping you stay on the good side of your prospects.

Word of Mouth…

Word of mouth advertising has never been on this big of a scale before prior to social media’s existence. In the past, the only form of word of mouth advertising is localized or transmitted via the telephone. However, with the rise or social media, such as twitter, Facebook or even YouTube, word of mouth has become one of the easiest ways to spread the news about your business as long as you are doing your job to please your customers. People are very connected and imagine how fast the viral factor of the news can spread if you did something so well that everyone is loving you for it.

As a marketer, one must NOT overlook the viral power on the word or mouth advertising that you get (mostly free) from social media. Creating brand awareness isn’t going to be that hard or expensive anymore as it was in the past. The only hard part is to maintain your image as the ‘best’ on your niche and keep your customers happy all the time. There’s no room for rude customer services or slow to response kind of replies. People will not only turn their heads away from your business … they could potentially destroy your image with just one angry post on their social media pages.

Think about it, it’s not worth fighting the crowd, instead give them what they want, and they will aid you in your business for free. All you need to do is play nice.

Sharing is Caring…

Social media brought upon a tool of that marketers dream of in the past. This tool is known as the ‘Share’ button. Needless to say, this single button is a dream come true for the elite marketers because it will help spread your business’ swag factor and when you are doing things right, you will find your product brand boosted to a level where people no longer question if your product is effective or not. There are those who do their research before purchase and then there are those who don’t. Do your best to let those who do their research and aid them to decide that your business is golden. They will in return tell the world (mostly those who never do any research online or are too busy or ignorant to do so) and your business is pretty much set for life.

  1. An expert on TV said one huge trend in ecommerce will be the continued empowerment of the consumer. No one telling the shopper what to buy, when to shop and how much to pay. Too many retailers are failing by not realizing that consumers want to do it on their terms. Time to give them the key to the car. Empower them and you’ll win loyalty. This system empowers both viewers and those sharing content.

  2. As word spread of the blasts on Monday afternoon at the Boston Marathon, social media seemed shaped by every aspect of the response, from runners giving their accounts of the race-turned-nightmare on Facebook, to authorities using Twitter to give instant updates, to The Boston Globe temporarily converting its homepage to a live blog that pulled in Tweets from Boston authorities, news outlets, and ordinary citizens. Imagine how footage must have spread via members of this network.

  3. I am developing quite an excitement about this innovative system. This system of social media sharing can really be a way for content to catch fire and even achieve viral status. I know a writer who wants to write ebook series and sell them online. I am going to tell him about this system so he can put up excerpts of his content into this system. Now I should find out how to go about doing that.

  4. I think in a way that social media has changed a lot more than just the marketing world it has changed the way we communicate with people and the way we stay in touch with friends. There isn’t anymore face to face interaction with people because it is all through social media even down to dating, why go out and find someone the old fashioned way?

  5. Glenna, I think I read this same article because I remember the “inflection point at the time it really made no sense to me but now that I have read this and how you related the two together it is much clearer now what he meant. Thank you for posting your comment and thank you to the author of the article as well.

  6. I recommend that anyone who is interested in profiting from the internet and social media sign up for this easy cash system while it is being offered for free. I know from experience that when you are researching new methods to make money from home, whether it’s a supplemental or full time income you seek, you must be willing to go through some trial and error in order to find what works.

  7. I have noticed that more marketers are taking note of many different social media opportunities and beginning to implement new social initiatives at a higher rate than ever before. One positive result from the economic downturn is the rapid growth of social media marketing. Many businesses have prompted to rely heavily on social media (including video marketing) as an inexpensive way to promote.

  8. I would say that this system is quite innovative and could very well become the next big thing in the area of social media. It is a great incentive for persons to spread the word and provide exposure for publishers of content. It is a win / win symbiotic alliance as far as I’m concerned. I hope to see this system continue to grow in popularity.

  9. I recently attended a symposium about social media. The topics included trends in digital media consumption, social media, engagement on mobile devices and a variety of community foundation projects funded by the Knight Community Information Challenge. The first-day featured mobile experts. Participants were a mix of CEOs and senior staff. This blog post is a summary of my notes from the day. I came out of it with an awe for the scale of social media.

  10. I believe that it is the explosion of mobile devices, particularly once Apple released the i-phone (and continued to release subsequent versions seemingly every few months) and after Google exploded on the scene with Android phones, that social media really took off. I would think that the majority of persons who live on social media networks are doing so from their smart phone while they’re on the go.

  11. I once read an article by a well known technical writer who talked about the inflection point. That point in the adoption of innovation where the early adopters have done all they can, and the continued acceptance of the innovation is dependent on the non-enthusiasts, if I can put it that way. I think that is what has been happening with the social media revolution in the past few years. This system is part of that revolution.

  12. Since the spread of content depends also on the content, those who want to spread their own content should know what makes it catchy. There are many elements that can cause a video to go viral through social media platforms. Kony 2012 hit on just about all of them. If you take some clues from that video, you can get a grasp on how to make a video go viral.

  13. Police agencies are embracing social media as never before, enlisting assistance for everything from tracking sex offenders to nabbing thieves. But with the growing acceptance of social media and texting as crime-fighting tools, authorities acknowledge there are potential pitfalls. A father who said his son was targeted by bullies at School voiced his complaints with a post that generated thousands of likes and shares on Facebook. Amid the emotional reactions, the Police came under heavy criticism, with some officers getting death threats.

  14. To understand how important social media is, it helps to look back at the time line. 2011 was the year where social media marketing became a runaway phenomenon. In 2012, brands began to realize the incredible efficacy of content marketing. 2013 is the year where companies are beginning to realize that you simply can’t gain an audience without social media, and you can’t educate and engage without branded content.

  15. The three most important factors in social networking are audience, audience, audience. Identify what kind of people you’re trying to reach and pay attention to what they’re saying. Build RSS feeds and monitor conversations using listening tools like TweetDeck, Social Mention and Seesmic. Set goals for engaging your contacts and monitor how much activity your efforts generate. How many retweets do you get on Twitter? How many reposts does your blog generate?

  16. The fact that the company branding really isn’t up to the company anymore and it more happens with the customer and what they are posting on social media is a scary concept, you are naturally going to have times where you don’t see eye to eye with your customers but that can damage your reputation so fast that you have to be very careful and pick your battles carefully as well.

  17. I remember when my dad started his construction business that word of mouth was the one true way to get business and he made sure that the house he built were quality homes. As he got older the technology started up and the quality of everything went down all at once, because word of mouth wasn’t as important you had ways around that.

  18. Samuel I agree you are going to have a certain amount of resistance from customers simply because they are not sure what it is yet, the longer something is out on the market the faster the resistance level is going to diminish especially in the electronic device world and any thing tech wise. Thank you for posting this is was very interesting.

  19. Technology surrounds us. Everywhere we look we are bombarded by hashtags, Facebook URLs and mobile applications. We are conditioned to real-time technology and things happening at the speed of lightif we have to wait for a webpage to load, we start complaining, clicking and wondering what is wrong with the wifi. When I go shopping, all I tend to see are signs with QR Codes. I’d say it’s a good time to market via social media.

  20. In social media terms, the future is rarely predictable. Many people were caught unaware by Pinterest’s explosive growth over the last year. There will always be surprises, but I suppose there are also some emerging and continuing social media trends that we can both track and predict with a certain degree of confidence. Social media usage is set to rise everywhere over the next couple of years but growth will continue to be far higher in emerging markets,

  21. Heather, I had not thought about it this way but you are right it would make it impossible to analyze anything and make comments in real time. I feel sorry for those college students who were making money this way but you are right again it would do no good to hire them. This is very interesting and I am wondering if this is all social media or just Twitter.

  22. A now famous tweet by @BarackObama is an example of how Twitter has become a part of the political mainstream. An example of a tweetable thought – is pithy and likely to be shared — that you find sprinkled throughout social media these days. The mild pressure to come up with re-tweetable posts is just one of the ways things have changed social-media-wise since the 2008 election, the first U.S. presidential election where social media was part of the equation.

  23. What marketers should be aware of is that close to 58 million people in the United States alone are registered users of various social media sites. That’s a huge and growing market to tap, so you must always be on the lookout for fresh clients. there is a significant rise in the number of people who follow brands using social media networks. This means that people prefer online platforms to become more familiar with companies.

  24. This cash system is innovative and I do not think that is an exaggeration. If it is not already spreading people’s content like wild fire, it is only a matter of time. With every new product, service or concept, there is always some measure of buyer resistance. Unless I am wrong about this affiliate type system, this service will have a bit of a resistance curve (if you will) to overcome.

  25. social-media data are essentially unstructuredthat’s what makes it so interesting and so hard to analyze. There is no tagging system that allows us to make sense of social-media data through analytical tools. We already know that any attempt at analyzing this data on a human scale is not even conceivable. I guess you can no longer hire a college student to watch your Twitter feed and respond to consumers in real time.

  26. In a world where the words “tweeting, “trending and “hashtag have become a part of our everyday vocabulary, it can be easy to forget that only a decade ago, social media as we’ve come to know it didn’t even exist. After all, Facebook wasn’t launched until 2004, YouTube until 2005 and Twitter until 2006. A decade ago, it would have been impossible to imagine what enormous impact these tools would have on our culture.

  27. You have got one of the better blog posts when it comes to information about social media marketing then I have seen in a long time. I was actually able to learn something from this post when most of them are dry and boring and you can’t get anything but a good nap out of it. Thank you fo r taking the time to post this and keep up the good work.

  28. This was a great blog post and I am surprised at how well you have put this together this is not something that I normally would get excited about or go out of my way to read but it was pretty interesting and I really enjoyed it. Thank you for doing it and please don’t feel like I was saying these are normally boring because that isn’t it at all.

  29. I think you are right “word of mouth advertising was a huge deal back in the day, you wanted to make sure your customers were happy because they were going to go out and tell their friends and family if they had a good or bad experience. Now days I don’t think that is as valued because of social media, they can toot their own horn that way.

  30. Of all the social media networks in cyberspace, it seems that LinkedIn and to a greater extent, Pinterest, are the networks which have exploded in popularity in recent years. I heard a stat which indicated that Pinterest now has tens of millions of users with seventy percent of those users being female. That in itself is a gold mine for businesses because women are the most prolific buyers.

  31. Your blog is great but you are going to have to keep it updates in order for the title to work, with how much the world changes this stuff on a daily basis in a couple of days what you mentioned here will be obsolete. Thank you for the work you put into this please keep posting those updates. And thank you again for the work you have done.

  32. Karl is right you have explained some of the stuff that most people don’t think about in your post here and I think if you will continue to post more information about this your post is going to explode with comments. Is your post designed to go back to your web site? That will cause the traffic on your web site to double and triple as well.

  33. Social media marketing has without a doubt been getting very popular for the last few years. But it depends on your business whether you use it, instead of normal pay per click. Social media marketing can bring you a brand and heck, it can even make you a celebrity in your niche overnight. Look at Cy, the guy from the viral song, Gangum Style. Youtube paid him 15 million bucks for that traffic.

  34. I would say the same goes for celebrities and other high profile political dignitaries and their relatives. Just look at the entire Kardashian family. Their reality show gives them exposure, but it is not even close to the number of Twitter followers that they have collectively. Facebook and Twitter is an instant news wire for companies and any journalist and entertainer.

  35. Getting internet traffic, or getting a post shared or retweeted can make your social media profile and content more relevant in cyberspace, and this kind of exposure has become a form of commerce. When you consider how you can monetize a website and use exposure to bring traffic to an establishment, it is actually just like money. That must be why we can now make money by sharing other people’s content.

  36. I hope that every company out there pays attention to the paragraph about customer satisfaction and customer service, I used to be in the field of customer service and it was very important to keep the customers happy all the time, but people have gotten away from that in the last few years and that is really going to hurt their business just like you mentioned.

  37. To get a real quick idea about the magnitude of social media, you don’t need to look very far. Try tuning into any sports broadcast, talk show, entertainment news and you will notice that most TV shows are now flashing Tweets at the bottom or side of the TV screen from high profile persons who are or have Tweeted about any subject that the show is discussing at that time.

  38. Social media has made marketing so much easier for companies both small and large. I was working for a Church once and they started using social media to advertise their church and it actually increased their attendance by two times as much. This was a great article and I will pass this on to my friends in the business of marketing.

  39. Karl you are right my own personal use of social media has exploded over the last year. There are many people that work from home using social media. I have been looking into using this to market my other business as well so please keep the information like this coming I am excited to see what is out there that will benefit me in my business.

  40. It really is incredible to understand to what degree social media has changed many industries including sports. Long before the days of Twitter, Facebook and Youtube, pro athletes and teams were not nearly as scrutinized as they are today. Today, high profile people (not just athletes) can’t go out of the house without being shot by paparazzi and TMZ posting their photos on social media networks.

  41. This is without a doubt one of the most unique concepts I have discovered in a while. People want their content to go viral, whether it is a silly, funny video or an e-book. I think this system is catered to making content relevant via social media networks. It is definitely worth trying out.

  42. You have done a great job on this blog post and I am excited to see what you come up with in your next post. You had a lot of information in this post that will be helpful to a lot of people including myself. It amazes me how fast things spread on the web and it is only getting better. Thank you for the information keep up the good work.

  43. The share button that everyone uses these days has taken marketing to a whole new level. I have never seen stuff go around the web as fast as it does when people use the share button on Facebook. I have learned that if I want something to spread quickly I can post it on Facebook and people will no about it within minutes of being posted.

  44. It is amazing to me how the social media boom has taken off over the past two years even, I know it started before then but in just the past year my social media alone has changed considerably. You have a great article here and you explain some of the issues that most people miss when considering social media and marketing via mobile devices.
